Wow.
So I grabbed an x-box 360 from work for the weekend. Ah, the joys of working in the gaming industry. They consider this homework...
We picked up Gears of War from the local Blockbuster because of all the hype around it and I wanted to see if it was really as good as they say. It got a 94% on metacritic which is stupendously high. And I can say that this is simply an amazing game. They don't make games like this for the Wii...
You may have seen the trailer (attached below). Video game trailers that don't show actual gameplay annoy me greatly, so I've attached a video of some early game play. I wish the video quality was better but believe me, the environment in the game is astounding. I honestly don't know how a third person shooter can get any more visually stunning. Only complaint is the lack of variety between weapons... but then again, I've barely started the game.
It's probably a good thing I don't own an x-box as I'm not sure I could keep a day job. Anyway, here is the trailer followed by the in-game footage.
oh, and Mom, there is blood. Lots and lots of blood... But in a good way.

I love shooters and they look real pretty nowadays but if you took away all the extra polygons and hi res textures the shooters today aren’t much different than when Duke Nukem came out. The AI is still stupid, the voice acting and dialogue is laughable and annoyingly repetitive and the plots all seem like they were written by 8 year olds with a sci fi fixation.
But will I rent or buy an Xbox360 to play GOW? You betcha!!! Because blowing up sh*t is FUN!!!!!!!!!!!

I enclosed my comment above in a “whine” tag but it didn’t show up.

…game aside, the version of “Mad World” in the ad is pretty solid, better than the original

Yes, I like that version too. That cover was originally on the Donnie Darko soundtrack. Details are covered in the “mad world” wikipedia entry.

ya, I liked that version when I first heard it a few years ago. but it’s a bit overplayed now in TV shows and movies.

Totally. A once obscure and poignant version has been reduced to commercial fodder. Damn marketers.

Dude, I loved that game. My buddy and I borrowed a 360 and had two sessions to beat it. Now the second session was a 12 hour stint with a one hour break for food but we absolutely had to beat it before the 360 had to go back. It was worth every minute. But we had to turn up the difficulty because it was a little easy. The great thing was, you can turn it up half way through and not have to start over again.
Revolutionary movement system.
Ask Janice how well your dinner plans went that night. Just make sure I’m outside of line of sight

Hey, the ability to change difficulty settings mid way through game is brilliant. I don’t know why every game isn’t like that.
Was that the night you guys blew us off for dinner? To play x-box????
Good man.
