Les Faux Bourgeois

Last night, we finally made it to Les Faux Bourgeois for dinner. We've been meaning to go for months but its a hard place to make a reservation to say the least. We were a little surprised that they took our booking with only 2 days notice. Our house guest Suzanne wanted to treat us to a meal and who were we to object!

For those of you not aware of this restaurant, it's a quaint little french café (picture 60s -70's motif) that has exceptional food for exceptional value. There is a very casual formality to the place where the waiter was in torn jeans and flip flops while some patrons were in a jacket and tie. Both looked completely in place. It's located in an... um... un-trendy area of town which actually lends to a bit of it's charm. It's far more suited to east van than yaletown. The service was slow to start leading me to believe 'ah, this truly is a French restaurant' however to my surprise, once the ball got rolling, was very good. The wine selection was minimal but varied enough to please most people I would think with average prices. The menu again was varied enough to please the masses but really... why would anyone order anything different than Le Steak Frites (with herb butter)??? For those of you who don't speak French, let me translate. That would be steak and freedom french fries with... herb butter. And to start? Escargot! What else?

As good as the escargot was, it was borderline too graphic for me. My escargot are usually baked in mushroom caps and smothered in thick, gooey garlic butter. These were just out there. But damn they were good. If you can get past the look, they are worth every penny. To prevent myself from gagging, I pretended they were the pickled eyeballs of African Pygmys. That seemed to help.

Stupid me for not taking my camera so no food shots to show. Next time I'll have to remember.

So bottom line, 2 big taste buds up for Les Faux Bourgeois.
